Update on the Ongoing Emergencies in Nicaragua and Guatemala

Dear SOS Community,

In recent weeks our partnering organizations in Nicaragua and Guatemala have been experiencing exceptionally difficult circumstances as a result of two different scenarios.

In Nicaragua, at the end of April 2018, policy changes to the Nicaraguan social security system led to demonstrations and protests that are still ongoing at this time. There have been violent clashes with police as part of the protests and to date there have been over 200 deaths as a result.

In Guatemala, on June 3rd, 2018, the Fuego volcano erupted sending ash and lava throughout communities in the department of Escuintla. This tragic incident has resulted in the death of over 80 people and more than 100 people remain missing.

The resilience of our partnering organizations and communities is as prevalent as ever before. We know the entire SOS Community wishes to send their heartfelt thoughts to our partners in Nicaragua; Seeds of Learning and ANIDES, and our partners in Guatemala; SEED Alliance and Niños de Guatemala, and the communities they work with.

SOS has been in close communication with our partners throughout these tumultuous times and we will continue to work closely together to coordinate effective responses to these tragic circumstances. In the meantime, we also wanted to share how the SOS community can get involved.

  • Any messages sent to the SOS Head Office will be forwarded to our partners, which we know is greatly appreciated by their teams. Please email Laura, SOS’s Program Director, at lviselli@studentsofferingsupport.ca if you would like to send a message to one of our partners.
  • And to make donations via the Red Cross:

Please continue to contact SOS Head Office and our partnering organizations for the latest information.
